Tymur Andriiovych Sokolov, a third-year full-time student of the Faculty of International Relations and Law at Khmelnytskyi National University (KhNU), majoring in 081 Law (Bachelor’s degree programme), has successfully completed the International Summer School for Social Sciences and Humanities Students at Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany). The academic mobility programme took place from 1 to 11 July 2026.
The primary objective of KhNU’s representative was to explore Ukraine’s role in contemporary Europe through an interdisciplinary perspective. For a future legal professional, the programme provided a unique opportunity to examine current European integration processes not only in theory but also within the practical context of the European legal community.
Tymur Sokolov’s programme at Justus Liebig University Giessen focused on three key areas:
1. Academic and Research Activities and the Legal Context of European Integration. As part of the Summer School, the student participated in a series of specialised seminars, interactive lectures, and interdisciplinary legal discussions. Particular attention was devoted to contemporary geopolitical challenges, language policy, migration processes, and Ukraine’s integration into the European Higher Education Area.
An important component of the legal discussions was the in-depth analysis of the evolving contractual relations between Ukraine and Germany within the framework of Ukraine’s European integration agenda, particularly in the context of implementing the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement. Special emphasis was placed on the institutional and legal mechanisms for aligning Ukrainian legislation with the acquis communautaire. In addition, participants explored international legal guarantees for the protection of refugees and displaced persons in EU Member States, the effectiveness of the Temporary Protection Directive, and the specific features of its legal implementation in Germany.
Upon successful completion of the intensive programme, Tymur received an official international certificate. This valuable European academic experience will be integrated into his individual educational pathway at KhNU, with the possibility of recognising the relevant academic components within his degree programme.
2. Cultural and Socio-Humanitarian Engagement. Alongside the academic programme, participants actively engaged in cultural events held in the city of Giessen and the surrounding region. One of the key objectives of these activities was to promote intercultural dialogue and strengthen German–Ukrainian mutual understanding. Tymur Sokolov demonstrated a high level of academic preparation by presenting Ukraine’s intellectual and legal context to an international audience. This experience contributed to the development of his skills in conducting scholarly discussions and presenting research findings in English within an international academic environment. It also provided valuable insights into the German legal and educational systems.
3. Academic Networking and International Communication. An important achievement of the programme was the establishment of long-term connections with an international community of students, legal professionals, researchers, and academics from Germany and Ukraine. These contacts create a solid foundation for future joint educational and research initiatives. Moreover, following his successful participation in the Summer School, Tymur was invited to join the prestigious Alumni Network of the German-Ukrainian University Network (DUHN) programme.
The participation of KhNU law students in programmes of this calibre confirms the high competitiveness of the University’s legal education, the relevance of its training in international and European law, and opens new opportunities for the further development of the University’s international academic mobility initiatives.
