Khmelnytskyi National University at the U_CAN Project Interim Review Meeting with Representatives of the European Commission

On 19 January 2026, an interim review meeting of the project «U_CAN – Ukraine towards Carbon Neutrality» was held online. Khmelnytskyi National University was represented at the meeting by Vice-Rector for Academic and Pedagogical Affairs Kateryna Skyba and Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science Pavlo Radiuk.

The project is implemented under the Horizon Europe programme with the support of the European Commission. The meeting brought together the project coordinators, partners from Ukraine and the European Union, and representatives of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

During the meeting, the overall progress of the project, key achievements and the results of the implementation of the work packages were presented, including:

  • project management and coordination of activities;
  • development of a platform for knowledge exchange and networking;
  • implementation of pilot initiatives in Ukrainian cities with the support of European partners;
  • modernisation and standardisation of technologies and practices;
  • capacity-building activities and mobilisation of local knowledge;
  • communication, dissemination and exploitation of project results.

Particular attention was paid to implementing pilot solutions for adaptive traffic management aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions, improving air quality, and creating a more sustainable urban environment in Ukrainian cities. Representatives of the pilot cities shared their initial results and challenges and discussed opportunities to scale up the solutions.

Khmelnytskyi National University is actively implementing the tasks of Work Package 4, which focuses on research and modelling of the transport system as a key element in achieving climate neutrality. Within this work package, the university team is working with transport flow data, analysing emission-reduction scenarios, and integrating intelligent transport solutions. In addition, in April 2026, the university is preparing a scientific and practical conference on sustainable transport systems and climate-neutral urban development, which will serve as a platform for exchanging research results between Ukrainian and European partners.

Participation in the first interim review meeting enabled alignment of the next steps in project implementation, defining priorities for the upcoming stage, and strengthening cooperation with international partners. The project now moves forward with the implementation of planned activities, preparation for forthcoming project events, and the university’s continued active involvement in developing climate-neutral solutions for Ukrainian cities.
