Khmelnytskyi National University hosted an online lecture delivered by Professor William Heath from Bangor University (United Kingdom), one of KhNU\u2019s key partner universities within the framework of the UK\u2013Ukraine University Twinning Initiative and the long-standing academic cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n

The event brought together students, PhD candidates, academic staff, representatives of the Faculties of Information Technologies and Engineering, Transport and Architecture, as well as young researchers working in the fields of automation, computer science, digital technologies, energy systems, and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor William Heath is one of the leading British experts in the fields of automatic control, digital control systems, and energy resilience. He currently serves as Head of the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangor University and is also Chair of the United Kingdom Automatic Control Council, the UK\u2019s national member organisation within the International Federation of Automatic Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the lecture, Professor Heath shared his academic and professional journey, speaking about his studies at the University of Cambridge and the Victoria University of Manchester, as well as his many years of experience working at leading universities in the United Kingdom and Australia. Particular attention was devoted to the modern organisation of higher education and scientific research in the United Kingdom, the functioning of British universities, PhD training, the development of research schools, and international research cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his presentation, Professor Heath also highlighted current trends in the development of control engineering, model predictive control, digital control systems, AI-based approaches, and interdisciplinary research. Students and young researchers of KhNU had the opportunity to learn about real-life examples of engineering solutions implemented in industry, energy systems, and high-tech research centres across the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly engaging part of the discussion focused on the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in contemporary scientific research. Professor Heath emphasised that AI has become an important tool for generating ideas, analysing literature, and working with large datasets; however, fundamental scientific approaches, critical thinking, and sound methodology remain the foundation of genuine science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecture was followed by an active question-and-answer session during which KhNU students and PhD candidates discussed academic career development, international research opportunities, the future of engineering education in the United Kingdom, and opportunities available to Ukrainian young researchers within the global academic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An important aspect of the cooperation between KhNU and Bangor University is the mentoring and advisory support provided to students and young researchers at Bangor University. During separate meetings, Professor William Heath has already worked with KhNU PhD students, offering professional guidance on presenting scientific results, developing research trajectories, strengthening applied research, and preparing international scientific publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a dedicated session, KhNU PhD candidates presented their research projects in the fields of cybersecurity, climate forecasting, virtual reality systems resilience, computer vision, additive manufacturing, and artificial intelligence applications. Professor Heath provided practical advice on academic communication, research structuring, engagement with the international scientific community, and presenting research outcomes at conferences and in international journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important area of cooperation concerns the development of joint scientific and innovation initiatives in the fields of control systems, cybersecurity, AI applications in healthcare, smart energy systems, greenhouse automation, and climate technologies. During previous meetings between representatives of KhNU and Bangor University, the participants discussed prospects for preparing joint international projects within the Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ programmes, as well as opportunities for establishing long-term research partnerships between the research groups of both universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special attention was also given to the activities of the KhNU Energy Efficiency Centre, the development of smart energy solutions, and research related to energy resilience and security. Professor William Heath expressed strong interest in further cooperation with KhNU researchers in these areas, particularly within future international grant applications and joint scientific publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisation of such events represents an important component of the internationalisation strategy of Khmelnytskyi National University, contributing to the development of an international academic environment and the integration of Ukrainian science and education into the global scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
